Frequently asked questions

What kind of equipment do you use?

We are always keeping up with new technology as it becomes available and adding new equipment that fits in nicely with our service applications to better provide serve our clients. That said though, our main “go to” UAV we use for any operation is the 3DR Solo.

Solo is the worlds first “smart” drone that has some of the most amazing and technologically advanced features making it a very safe and versatile aircraft.
We find Solo to be very easy to fly and the best fit for virtually all of our client’s applications.

Are UAV’s legal to use?

The short answer is Yes, although it is highly regulated for commercial use in Canada.

If you are using them for recreational use, there are also strict regulations that must be followed AND you must have liability insurance in place.

To use them for commercial work however and/or for monetary gain requires a permit from Transport Canada known as a “Special Flight Operations Certificate” (SFOC). There are variations to the SFOC and it is lengthy process which also requires professional training for operators.

What‘s the difference between drones and UAV’s?

The answer turns out to be more complex than might be expected. Strictly speaking, a drone is an unmanned aircraft that can fly autonomously. That is to say that the aircraft can fly “uncontrolled” by others or by outside forces. On the other hand…

An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), commonly known as a drone, or as an unmanned aircraft system (UAS), and also referred by serveral other names, is an aircraft without a human pilot aboard. The flight of a UAV may be controlled with various kinds of autonomy; either by a given degree of remote control from an operator, located on the ground or in another vehicle, or fully autonomously, by on-board computers.

Can your company legally fly anywhere?

Collins Safety Services can operate anywhere in Canada.

We are authorized by Transport Canada and hold a “Standing” Special Flight Operations Certificate (SFOC) to operate in any controlled or uncontrolled airspace.

How safe is it?

Our Unmanned Aerial Services are extremely safe for many reasons.

  • Firstly, we are a “safety” business so everything we do is bound by regulation, safe operating procedures, training, ethical standards… and more training.
  • The use of UAV’s, Drones, or alike… is regulated by Transport Canada who provides strict guidelines and instruction for the safe operation of any aerial mission. Our SFOC is validation of a safe operation.
  • Permission is granted only to those who meet the regulatory and training requirements as set out by TC.
  • We have developed a very comprehensive training policy and Aerial Operations Manual for all our pilots and ground crew that meet or exceed minimum requirements. This helps us ensure we have all our checks and balances in place for ensuring safety prior to any aerial operation.

Are you insured?

You bet!

In this business, insurance is a must. We carry a minimum of $1,000,000 dollar liability insurance coverage just for our UAV Aerial Operation Services. That’s on top our general liability for the business.

What is the cost for providing this service?

Each project is different… as is the Unmanned Aerial Services (UAS) we provide. They are each individually unique and complex in their own right, so to is the cost which is based on each operation respectively. Because our services include a wide range of options from photos and video’s, to 2D/3D modeling, Surveying, Mapping, Fly-through video production and more… the cost will ultimately depend on the options required.
